Without getting into a political discussion, I'd like to know if anyone knows what will happen to Tricare for retirees and their families if universal healthcare is passed.
My husband was seriously considering getting out of the military at 12 years when LUCKILY he had a great First Sergeant who explained how much the health care benefits would make a difference to him and his family in the future if he could just "stick it out." He did (he stayed in for 20 years and 15 days), and while I could say that the VA and retirement pay are incredibly helpful, the thing I am grateful for every day is our fantastic health care. We opted for Tricare Prime and pay for it each year. I know there are some who are grandfathered into the Tricare system and don't pay anything for it. I also know that a huge part of the Defense budget is taken up by paying for healthcare for veterans and their families. I have no doubt that if, given the option, they could send us all into the universal healthcare system in order to save huge amounts of money, they would.
Is there an organization (or law on the books already) that will protect us from universal health care? I can't imagine it's going to offer us any semblance of decent care compared to what we get now.
