What is the penalty for telling bald-faced lies about the opposition during a presidential campaign?

I'm thinking there is no downside and, as the lies can only help your cause, why not lie your arse off? Nobody sticks around for the rebuttal, a fact the strategists know well.

From what I can tell, the last guy who made an attempt at honesty was Jimmah C. Did it do him any good? Not quite.
